There are few moments in the life of a parish as beautiful, as rich, and as deeply moving as the Easter Vigil, the night when darkness gives way to light, when silence is broken by song, and when the Church gathers to proclaim with joy: Christ is Risen!
At the heart of this sacred night stands the Easter Candle, quietly yet powerfully proclaiming the mystery we celebrate. This year we purchased one made from 56% pure beeswax; it speaks of the purity of Christ Himself. As it burns, it consumes itself in order to give light, a striking image of Jesus, who gives Himself completely for us, holding nothing back. The five grains of incense embedded in the candle remind us of His five sacred wounds. The Risen Christ is not distant from suffering; He is the same Jesus who was crucified. His glory is born from love poured out.
Marked upon the candle are the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. In this simple sign, we are reminded that Christ is Lord of all time and eternity. Every moment of our lives, every joy and every sorrow, finds its meaning in Him.
And yet, there is something even more tender hidden within this symbol. The candle, born of the work of bees, draws our attention to creation itself. All of creation participates in this night of light. In the quiet labour of the bees, the Fathers of the Church saw an image of the Christian community, the Church, working together, building something beautiful, something radiant. Just as bees gather and form the wax, so we, as a parish family, are called to build a community of light, where Christ shines through each one of us.
The Easter Vigil is rich with signs, fire, light, water, bread, and wine, all life-giving, all pointing to the new life Christ offers us.
This year’s Easter Vigil was made even more special for our parish as we journeyed alongside ten members who were baptized or received and who faithfully attended the RCIA programme. Their openness, courage, and desire to seek Christ have been a true inspiration to us all, reminding us that faith is always a living journey, one that continues to unfold in each of our lives.
With great joy, we witnessed:

Keeley, Owen, and Elliott receive the gift of new life in Christ through Baptism. We rejoiced as Carla, Daniel, Luca, Matthew, and Michael made their profession of faith and were received into the full communion of the Catholic Church. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit in Confirmation and anointed with the sacred Chrism blessed by Bishop Philip at the Chrism Mass, they now share fully in the life of the Church.
We also warmly welcomed Alexandru and Sandra, who have journeyed from the Orthodox tradition into full communion with us, a beautiful reminder of the unity to which Christ calls His Church.
As we each held our candles and renewed our Baptismal promises, we were reminded that this night is not only about them, but also about all of us. We are all called to carry the light of Christ into the world. We are all called to be witnesses of the Resurrection.
We give heartfelt thanks to Deacon Paul Evans, our RCIA coordinator, for his dedication, guidance, and pastoral care throughout this journey. Our sincere gratitude also goes to Martin Wood, his deputy, along with Jo Wood, Christy Del Fresno, Luke Jupp, and George Lewis, who generously gave their time and presence, helping to make each session engaging, reflective, and filled with meaningful discussion. Their commitment has truly helped form a welcoming and vibrant path of faith for our candidates and catechumens.
We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all who contributed so generously to the beauty and reverence of the Easter Vigil, from our welcomers and collectors to our media team, and to the many volunteers whose quiet dedication made this sacred celebration so special.
A special word of thanks must also be given to our amazing Choir, led by Martin Wood, and to our Organist, Johann Diaz. Through their gift of music, they lifted our hearts and voices, making the psalms and hymns not simply something we sang, but something we experienced as prayer. Their contribution transformed the Vigil into a truly divine and uplifting celebration, drawing us more deeply into the mystery of this Holy Night.
To those who proclaimed the readings and sang the psalms so beautifully, thank you for helping us to truly listen to the Word of God and enter more deeply into the story of our salvation. Your voices carried not just words, but prayer.
To our dedicated altar servers, thank you for your faithful and attentive service at the altar, assisting with such care and dignity on this most sacred night.
Our sincere gratitude goes to James for preparing the Easter fire, that powerful symbol from which the light of Christ was first kindled among us, transforming darkness into light.
We also thank our Salesian brothers for their prayerful presence and service, quietly supporting the liturgy and the life of our parish in so many ways.
And finally, a special word of thanks to Martin for coordinating and organising all the liturgical elements of the celebration. Your attention to detail and commitment ensured that the richness and beauty of the Easter Vigil unfolded in a truly prayerful and seamless way.
We are deeply blessed as a parish to have so many who serve with such generosity, devotion, and love.
And so, as the Easter Candle burns brightly in our church throughout this sacred season, may it also burn within our hearts. May we become what we celebrate, a people of light, a people of hope, a people alive in the Risen Christ.
Christ is risen. He is truly risen. Alleluia!
