Readers Formation Day

On Saturday 28th February 2026 a group of over 35 parish readers gathered in our church hall for a formation day.  We welcomed Mary Rouse from the Society of Saint Gregory who led the day.

In the morning Mary gave some background about recent changes that have taken place, in particular the changes to the texts which came in last year.  She reminded everyone of the significance of the Liturgy of the Word in the Mass and the important role the readers play as they proclaim God’s words to the assembled congregation.  She also offered some helpful advice on best practice and good technique.

The morning ended with some practical insights led by Will who organises the readers’ rotas and a chance to ask questions.

A delicious lunch was served by the Social team and this was a good opportunity for our readers from the different Sunday Masses to meet and share experiences.

The afternoon session was a practical workshop in the church.  Attendees had the chance to practice their reading and receive some tips and feedback from Mary which was both interesting and really helpful.

The day concluded with Evening Prayer.

It was clear that everyone who attended the day learned lots and enjoyed it.  One attendee wrote afterwards:

It was a wonderful day and I really enjoyed it. It’s so important – the reading during Mass – as it is the Word of God, living and active in us all. I think it will be very useful to do the training as often as necessary. Perfect catering, training and organisation from the parish. Thank you friends.

A big thank you to Mary Rouse for leading the day; to Valerie Strange, Will Lyons and Martin Wood from the Liturgy & Worship Ministry Team for their  planning and organisation; to Sharon Boylett and the Social Ministry Team for providing  wonderful refreshments;  and to Fr Anthony for enabling the day to happen.
