My Journey of Faith: Reflections on The Rite of Election
Hi there, my name is Owen and I am from far, far away in the next town over – Woking. Growing up, I never had an official faith, but I was very aware of the fact I was a small part of a large world. I then started to understand that this world is part of an infinite universe. This fact never made me feel small though. Quite the opposite. As I got older I started feeling even more connected and relaxed about being a part of something bigger than myself. Over the past few years this feeling grew stronger, and since getting married to Eleanor in Our Lady and Saint Dominic, and attending Mass on Sundays, I have felt a greater need (or perhaps calling) to explore faith.
Going through the RCIA programme with my fellow candidates and catechumens has been eye-opening, thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable, and recently resulted in us being part of the Rite of Election at Portsmouth Cathedral. Over 250 catechumens and candidates, their sponsors, godparents, family members, parish communities, and parish clergy all came together to participate in this significant liturgy. For me, this was a very profound and full-circle moment. From growing up without knowing God through a faith, hearing the call to learn more and grow closer to God, to now being surrounded by others all doing the same. I felt welcome, seen and wanted in the Catholic faith.
Reflecting on the day now, two things come to my mind in particular. 1: The opening Hymn, ‘Bread of Heaven.’ This has been one of my favourites for as long as I can remember. It brings family memories to mind, so in a way it felt like they were with me on the day. 2: A couple of last year’s participants gave very personal, honest and heart-felt speeches about the year they have had since their Rite of Election in 2025. These made me feel both at ease, and that I was in the right place.
The Rite of Election was another important, and validating, milestone on my journey. I am now looking forward to my Baptism at the Easter Vigil with our wonderful parish and excited to strengthen my relationship with God.
Thank you all so much for being such a warm, vibrant and welcoming community. God bless.
