There are many occasions in the New Testament when Jesus enjoyed a meal with a variety of people. I am sure he would have enjoyed this one.
Dinner for the elderly was held on Sunday 17th December 2023 in the Church Hall
About 60 of us assembled in the hall at 1pm. As well as members of our parish, it was good to welcome guests from outside the parish. The hall had a festive and inviting appearance. Tables seated six, had smart table cloths and decorated Christmas table centres. Younger members of the parish waited at the tables with friendly smiles. We were served drinks, which helped us settle in. We pulled crackers, wore paper hats and told silly cracker jokes.
And then came the food. Our main course was turkey breast, sausage and bacon, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a delicious gravy. There was plenty of everything – a feast fit for a king! Thanks to James and Cameron, our chefs in the kitchen. Apparently they had to overcome trouble with the oven, but we were oblivious to that as we tucked in to our delicious, piping hot meals. This was followed by traditional Christmas pudding and brandy sauce, or gateau (the gateau had to be rescued from the freezer for defrosting by Sharon in her PJs at 6am !) We had further treats of mince pies and chocolate mints with our teas and coffees.
It was good to listen to the happy chatter and laughter, as people enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. Everyone I have spoken to, both parishioners and guests, said how much they had enjoyed the afternoon. Sharon and Angela, and their happy band of helpers, should feel proud of having put on such a successful event. I felt anything but lonely. It was a wonderful and joyous occasion, to meet and chat to such lovely people in such a friendly, social and happy atmosphere.
