After lots of preparation, prayer, and dedication by our Salesian brothers and Animators – we are happy to share everything we have been up to at our very first DON BOSCO SUMMER CAMP! Our four-day camp consisted of four key themes: LOOK, LISTEN, CHOOSE, and ACT – all inspired by the wedding feast in Cana.
DAY ONE – ‘LOOK’
Day one explored the aspect of looking with the eyes of faith and love, inviting our young people to grow in self-awareness. When reflecting on the wedding feast in Cana, Mary noticed the shame and embarrassment that would’ve fallen on the wedding hosts if wine ran out, and through this observation and compassion, brought the need straight to Jesus who provided for all. In the same spirit, we encouraged the children to notice the needs of others and respond with the same compassion.
We started the day off with Holy Mass, before heading to Queen Elizabeth Park, where we put our theme of ‘LOOK’ into practice! On a beautiful, sunny day, our young people took part in an exciting scavenger hunt, encouraging them to pay attention to the world and nature around them and to work together as a team. We also enjoyed nature walks, games, and plenty of time outdoors giving everyone a chance to explore, have fun, and get to know one another.
DAY TWO – ‘LISTEN’
Day two invited our young people to explore what it means to listen – not simply with our ears, but with our hearts. We continued our reflection on the Wedding Feast at Cana, focusing on Mary’s words to the servants: “Do whatever He tells you.”. These simple but beautiful words are a lovely example of trust and faith. Mary trusted in Jesus, and the servants listened and responded to His instruction. Faith begins with hearing the Word of God.
After starting the day with Holy Mass, we headed to Vue cinema to watch ‘500 Miles’. The film gave our young people an opportunity to explore themes of listening, family, friendship, perseverance and the importance of paying attention to our fellow brothers and sisters around us. It was a truly heartfelt film that touched on many meaningful lessons and gave our young people plenty of opportunities for reflection and discussion. Through the story, we were encouraged to think more deeply about the people in our own lives, the importance of truly listening to others, and how we can support and walk alongside one another through life’s challenges.
DAY THREE – ‘CHOOSE’
Day three delved into opening the minds and hearts of our young people as they learn discernment among the many choices of life. Returning once again to the Wedding Feast at Cana, we reflected on the moment when Mary brought the situation to Jesus. Jesus knew what was happening, and He had a choice: would He act, or would He wait? Would He step forward, or would He allow the situation to unfold? Yet, ultimately, His love prevailed and Jesus chose to act, responding to the need and revealing His care for those who were in difficulty.
As always, our day began with Holy Mass and our day was held within the Parish. We enjoyed a variety of activities, including games, group discussions, and moments of reflection, all designed to encourage our young people to think about the choices they make and the values that guide them. One of the highlights was our ‘Around the World’ activity, which took place across the Church grounds. This activity required plenty of teamwork, communication, and decision-making, challenging our young people to work together, think carefully, and make choices as a team. Through all the activities, we were reminded that the choices we make, whether big or small, can have an impact on those around us.
DAY FOUR – ‘ACT’
Our final theme was ‘Act’, and day four invited each child to step beyond the camp and into the world with purpose, committing themselves to acts of service. Rooted in our Catholic tradition, we encouraged them to live out their faith through love and service. Simply yet meaningfully.
We gathered together for the final Holy Mass of our Summer Camp, giving thanks to God for the many blessings of the week and for the wonderful memories we had built together. The rest of the day was filled with plenty of joy, laughter, celebration with dancing, games and a special talent show. We were delighted to see our young people confidently share their musical talents and gifts with one another. It was a wonderful reminder that each of us are blessed with unique gifts and talents that can be shared with others! We also took the time to reflect on the past four days, thinking about what we have learnt and how we can carry these lessons with us beyond the Parish and into our everyday lives.
And just like that, our very first Don Bosco Summer Camp came to an end! Across four days, our young people learned to LOOK, LISTEN, CHOOSE, and ACT. A huge thank you to our Salesian brothers, Animators, volunteers, Father Anthony, and everyone who helped make these four days possible! Most of all, thank you to our young people for filling the camp with so much joy, energy and lovely memories!
We continue to pray over you all and we truly hope that memories from this week stays with our young people long after the camp has ended.
Until next time…
